Dental School Selection

“You should apply broadly to boost your chance of getting admitted.”

This blog will give you a basic understanding of the importance of applying to out-of-state(OOS) schools. You will also get an OOS-friendly schools list.

In this guide, we’ll break down what it means to be OOS-friendly and share a list of schools that are known for giving out-of-state students a fair shot.

Applying wide net is smart, but it has to be strategic. With 60+ dental schools in the U.S., it’s tempting to apply to as many as possible. But if you’re applying as an out-of-state (OOS) applicant, not every school will give you a fair shot. This means although you apply to all 60+ schools, most of them will be less likely to accept you. Keep in mind, that doesn’t mean you’re automatically rejected from the other schools; it just means you’re playing a tougher game in those cases. This is a supportive suggestion to help you use your time, energy, and application fees wisely. By identifying OOS-friendly schools, you increase your chances of landing interviews and ultimately getting accepted.

This list is based on my personal research and the data I’ve collected from publicly available sources, Reddit, and school-reported statistics. It is intended to help guide fellow applicants, but it may not reflect each school’s most current policies. Please double-check with individual schools before applying. Have financial difficulties for dental school tuition?

NOT a problem!

Some public dental schools accept residency reclassification to allow you to switch to in-state tuition after the first year.

Consequence? You have to give up your original residency, and you need a strong academic background in order to get into those dental schools.
