Experiences needed beyond academic:

These experiences are needed for the application. Academic was crucial, so does the real real-life experiences. Dental school applies a holistic review process.

Letter of Evaluation

Most dental schools require at least 3 Letters of Recommendation (LORs):

  • 2 from professors (usually science professors)

  • 1 from a dentist

  • OR 1 Committee Letter

How to get a strong LOR from a professor?

  1. Build a relationship early. Stay after class, ask questions, and participate.

  2. Ask before the semester ends or as soon as possible. Professors forget students quickly.

  3. Make sure to go to their office hours to ask questions. When they accept your invitation, you can go to their office hour again to discuss your current progress in academic or extracurricular curriculum.

  4. If you’re choosing between professors, pick the one who knows you best.

Shadowing

Aim for 100–150+ hours to be competitive (mainly on general dentist, DDS).

How to ask dentist/How to find a dentist a shadow?

  1. Ask your own dentist

    • If you have a regular dentist, ask them first! Many dentists are happy to help their own patients

  2. Cold Calling Nearby Dental Practices (Most Common but Takes Persistence)

    • Search for dental offices near your home (Google Maps, Apple Maps, Yelp, or ADA Find-A-Dentist).

  3. Visit the Office in Person (More Effective than Calling)

    • Dress professionally and bring a printed CV/resume.

  4. Rejections are common. Persistence is key!

  5. Never be shy. The more you ask, the better your chances!

Volunteer

At least 100+ hours to be competitive. Volunteering is closely aligned with the mission of many dental schools, especially those focused on service, equity, and public health.

  1. Dental-Related Volunteer Opportunities (Highly Recommended)

    • Free & Low-Cost Dental Clinics – Assisting at community clinics can provide hands-on exposure to patient care.

  2. Healthcare & General Volunteer Opportunities (Recommended)

    • Hospitals & Clinics – Many hospitals need volunteers to assist with patient care or administrative support. You can check your local hospital’s volunteer department.

  3. Volunteer at underserved communities (Recommended)

    • Food banks & Shelters – Getting involved in service activities that support underserved or vulnerable populations shows your commitment to healthcare access and community well-being.

Opportunities:

  • Healing California, California Careforce, RAM, MOM, Global Relief, Mobile dental van, such as Colgate BSBF, local public dental clinic, and hospital.

Research

While not required, some schools care, and some do not.

  • If you aim for top-tier, research-heavy schools, then you need it.

Extracurricular activities /Leadership

You do not need multiple leadership roles to stand out. Some schools highly value leadership, while others don’t emphasize it as much. 1-2 strong leadership positions are enough to put you in a good position.

Some common examples:

  1. Pre-Dental Club Officer

  2. Club officer/president

  3. Tutoring or Teaching Leadership

  4. Volunteering Leadership

  5. Work/Business Leadership

  6. Sports/Team Captain
